How to Count the Days Between Two Dates

Inclusive versus exclusive counting, and why the answer can differ by one.

3 min read

Step by step

  1. Count whole calendar days from the earlier date to the later date.
  2. That result excludes the start date and includes the end date.
  3. Add one if you need both endpoints counted (an inclusive count).
  4. Example: 2026-01-01 to 2026-03-01 is 59 days.

Key takeaway: Decide up front whether both endpoints count.
